Remembering Barbara Krick

By Dale

Barbara Krick, born 1931, died on Jul 26, 2024. She was a long-time member of International Neighbors, having been part of the Westside Tea Group and becoming International Neighbors’ President in 1987.

She was interviewed for the booklet we published for International Neighbor’s 50th anniversary, "Memories and Reflections,”  and the following is based on  that interview.

Barbara joined International Neighbors in the 1960’s and remembered the English classes held upstairs at the Pound House on UM’s campus. The Madelon Pound House, later called the Ginsberg Center, supported community engagement and outreach programs like International Neighbors. Between 1959 and 1991, the Pound House also housed The Exchange - a kind of lending library where winter clothes, baby cribs and kitchen items were collected and lent out to women who were members of International Neighbors and needed those items while they were in Ann Arbor. The Exchange closed once yard sales became popular.

Barbara also recalled the Annual Gallup Park Spring Picnics and meetings devoted to discussions of wedding trends. She loved seeing the trajectory of IN guests who became members and then later joined the Board, as our invaluable Guest Coordinator Haru Wada did in the 1990’s.  Barbara’s daughter, Kathy, a graphic artist at the U of M, helped set up the printed version of  Living in Ann Arbor.  Barbara was active through 2010, and some of us still remember her fondly.
